Six Steps to a Successful Search!

Start with a well-defined question or topic
Identify key concepts using common terms AND scientific/technical vocab
Know how much and what type of information is needed
1. Consider time span (5 years prior is a good rule of thumb)
2. For background info: try books or e-books; For journal articles/studies: try databases
Build your search with AND, OR and NOT
1. Combine synonyms using OR
2. Use AND to narrow down your search
3. Try OR to broaden it
4. Remember each database may be searched differently
Use search filters (patient age, language, etc.) to further narrow down your results
